The Daytime Emmy Awards have been announced for 2010 and in the soap opera category, the ABC daytime drama, General Hospital (GH) leads with 18 nominations. The Young and the Restless (Y&R) follows close behind with 16 nominations, and also competes with GH for Outstanding Drama Series.
Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series
According to Soapcentral.com, the 18 nominations for General Hospital make it one of the "most honored programs in daytime television history." General Hospital has won the award for Outstanding Drama Series 10 times out of 22 times being nominated. The 10 wins are the most of any show in this category.
General Hospital has strong competition in the battle for best drama series. The Young and the Restless continues to be the most watched daytime drama, and has been the most popular for over 20 years. Other nominations for best drama are All My Children (AMC) and The Bold and the Beautiful (B&B).
Each soap opera submits one episode for consideration for the best drama series category. According to Soaps.com, the four best drama contenders submitted the following episodes/storyline:
- All My Children (AMC) - Adam kills Stuart
- Bold and the Beautiful (B&B) - Ann's death
- General Hospital (GH) - The Carnival of Doom
- Young and the Restless (Y&R) - Collen's heart is given to Victor
Daytime Emmy Acting Categories
For the Outstanding Actor and Actress categories, names are first submitted by each daytime drama series, which are called Daytime Emmy Pre-nominations. The actual nominations are chosen from this pre-nomination pool of actors and actresses. The main nomination categories are Outstanding Lead Actor/Actress; Outstanding Supporting Actor/Actress; Outstanding Younger Actor/Actress.
